How my personal experience as a language-learner has influenced my teaching approach (２)
Despite spending some time studying basic grammar on my own, my primary focus was on fluency. I would use whatever grammar or vocabulary was most convenient to get my message across, even though this meant that my spoken Spanish was not necessarily very pretty or sophisticated. I always had my mini dictionary on me (back when everyone still used paper dictionaries), and in those times when I needed a specific word not already in my personal Spanish lexicon, I would research it and memorise it for future use. And if I came across a new word or expression from a speaking partner that seemed interesting or useful, I would practice saying it aloud, testing its use in different sentences to get a feel for it, then likewise store it in my Spanish memory bank. In doing this, I became more adept at spontaneously producing language, and had a better grasp of the language that was of most use to me. And by actively learning the language, I enjoyed the language-learning experience more. If my goal was to become proficient in Spanish, the journey itself to get there was immensely rewarding.
独学で基本的な文法を勉強する時間はあったものの、私が重点を置いたのは流暢に話すことでした。そのため、必ずしもきれいで洗練されたスペイン語ではなかったとしても、自分のメッセージを伝えるのに最も適した文法やボキャブラリーであれば何でも使っていました。常にミニ辞書を持ち歩き（まだ世の中が紙の辞書を使っていた時代）、自分のスペイン語辞書にない特定の単語があれば、この先使うときのためにその単語を調べて覚えていました。
また、スペイン語で会話する中で、新しい単語や表現で面白そうなもの、役に立ちそうなものに出会ったら、声に出して練習し、さまざまな文章でその使い方を試して感覚をつかんでいきました。そうすることで、私は臆することなく言葉を発することに慣れ、自分にとって最も有効な言葉をよりよく把握できるようになっていきました。また、積極的に言語を学ぶことで、言語学習がより楽しくなりました。私の目標がスペイン語をマスターすることであったとすれば、そこに至る過程そのものが非常に実り多いものでありました。
