How my personal experience as a language-learner has influenced my teaching approach (1/3)
It is often said that one of the things that most impacts a person’s teaching style and approach is personal experience as a student.
A key part of what makes me the teacher I am today is my own experience as a student of a second language. As a foreigner living in Japan, I still struggle regularly with new or forgotten vocabulary and grammar structures, and reading kanji can be a frustrating experience at times. I also remember what it was like to study French as a child (I was not a good student, I am afraid to say), with teacher-centred classes that focused on grammatical rules practiced through reading and listening activities while we slowly worked our way through a textbook around which the entire class format was based.
But more so than learning Japanese and French, it was learning Spanish that proved to be the most formative language-learning experience for me. Although I vaguely remember attending lessons for a short period, my main language-learning strategy was by reading books and especially meeting people. People in the street, people in bars and restaurants, and even people at the beach.
その人の指導スタイルやアプローチに最も影響を与えるもののひとつは、学習者としての個人的な経験だとよく言われます。
今の私があるのは、私自身が第二外国語を学んだ経験があるからです。日本に住む外国人である私は、今でもしばしば新しい語彙や忘れてしまった語彙、文法構造に苦労していますし、漢字を読むのにイライラすることもあります。また、子供の頃にフランス語を勉強したときのこともよく覚えています（残念ながら、あまり優秀な生徒ではなかったのですが）。それは教師中心の授業スタイルで、リーディングやリスニングのアクティビティを通じて文法規則を練習することに重点を置きながら、授業のベースとなる教科書をゆっくりと読み進めていくものでした。
しかし、日本語やフランス語の学習以上に、私にとって最も形成的な言語学習体験となったのはスペイン語の学習でした。短期間レッスンに通ったことはうっすらと覚えているのですが、私の主な学習法は本を読むことと、特に人に会うことでした。道行く人々、バーやレストランにいる人々、そしてビーチにいる人々などです。
